Brake repair can cost anywhere between $100 to $1,000. Although some repairs are inevitable, there are a few things the vehicle owner can do to service their brakes and prevent major damage later on. By keeping adequate levels of brake fluid and paying close attention to the brakes, you can help ease the shock of some brake repair bills.

Brake fluid is a hydraulic liquid that transfers power from the pedal to the brakes. If the brake pedal depresses all the way down to the floor, or if it takes longer to bounce back after depressing the pedal, there may be a leak in the master cylinder. The reservoir for the brake fluid is located under the hood of the car. It is translucent with a line to indicate a full level. If the liquid falls below this line, it should be refilled, and the system should be checked for any leaks. If the system is noticeably leaky, it is best to not drive the car until it has been serviced by an auto technician, who handles this type of brake repair.

However, if the problem persists without a noticeable leak, it should be taken to a technician anyway to ensure safe operation of the vehicle. The cap covering the reservoir will indicate which grade of brake fluid the car uses; this is also listed in the owners manual. There should be some precaution with this task because adding too much fluid can force air into the system and cause more damage. A mechanic can bleed the system to add fresh fluids.

Leaks elsewhere in the braking system can cause a hard pedal that does not depress with the normal force. This is usually caused by a leak in the vacuum hose to the brake booster. This can be diagnosed by pumping the brakes with the engine turned off to release any vacuum that is still in the system. With the foot depressed on the brake, start the engine. If the pedal still requires more force, then there is a leak in the hose that should be replaced.

Other problems with the brake pedal include a sticking pedal, which is usually caused by a build up of brake fluid or grease on the brake pads. Sometimes the culprit is a bad drum or rotor that needs to be resurfaced. If this is the case, there may be some chatter along with a sticking pedal when the brakes are applied. Applying a de-greaser to clean the rotors and replacing the pads should fix the problem. However, further investigation is necessary to find the cause of the contamination, such as a a leaky caliper or hose.

The brakes are the single most important safety system in a vehicle. To avoid unsafe driving conditions and expensive repairs, it is important to pay close attention to how the brakes behave. The brake pedal is one of the first indicators of an issue, so pay attention to how it behaves to diagnose any potential issues. Hopefully, there will be no surprises when it is taken to a mechanic for brake repair, especially if the owner is aware of the potential issues and the costs involved.

There’s nothing more intimidating (and frustrating) for a woman than being treated as if we aren’t smart enough. Unfortunately, some of this thinking prevails, particularly in male dominated settings.

How many of us feel truly confident with a visit to the mechanic? Do you really know what they’re doing under the hood? Are there things you can do to keep yourself from being ripped of when you take your car in for service?

I pride myself on being a highly intelligent, rational-thinking human being who can tell the difference between a legitimate problem and a snow job in most cases. However, over the years I have become increasingly wary of unscrupulous mechanics and the likelihood that I will eventually fall prey (or have already) to schemes geared towards separating me from my hard-earned money as quickly as possible. Of course, this may come across to some of you as paranoid behavior, but I firmly believe that the best way to protect yourself from auto repair fraud and deception is to simply put yourself in “the know”.

1. Get to know your car and its needs.
How many women out there know the process involved for changing the oil in a car? Almost all of us know that it has to be done every 3,000 to 5,000 miles — whether or not the little sticker is up in the right-hand corner of your windshield.

But, did you know that there are different types of oil out there? There’s conventional oil, which has to be changed every few thousand miles, and then there are synthetic blends and full synthetic oils, which are WAY more expensive, and in most cases, unnecessary for your everyday driver to use.

Did you know that there really isn’t much difference between using a store brand oil filter and a name brand one (other than price)? And how about add-on auto repair services like fluid checks, air filter replacements, etc.? Unfortunately, not all car owners have this type of information down pat (well, including me). Most of us don’t pay that much attention to this kind of stuff, but when you stop to think that there could be as much as a $20 to $30 difference in the price of your auto service, it might actually be beneficial to start learning the ropes. Knowing how much it costs to own your car would be a start.

2. Have the right attitude.

As with most things in life, a good attitude at the car shop will take you far, while a bad attitude could land you a huge auto repair bill. If you’re shy and offer little resistance to suggestions and “recommendations” being made by your auto mechanic, you can almost bank on paying more for your auto repair costs than you bargained for. On the flip side, being too aggressive or arrogant will also cost you. The ideal demeanor is cool, calm, friendly, and confident. This will send a message to your auto mechanic that you trust him to do what needs to be done, but you will catch him the instant he tries to pull the wool over your eyes.

3. Review a mechanic’s work order carefully.
One of the most important things that you can do to dodge an outrageous auto repair bill is to avoid signing a blank work order. One favorite money-making technique used by several garages I’ve visited entails giving the customer a verbal estimate for auto repairs and having them sign a blank work order. This gives the mechanic the ability to add anything they want to the repair bill, which by the way, has to be paid in full before the garage will release your car. Legally, the mechanic has the right to place a lien on your car in order to secure the money for the auto repairs. If you fail to meet your obligation, he gets to keep and/or sell your car to recoup his money. I actually had this happen to me after taking my husband’s boat in for repair. The original “verbal” quote was for $1,800. I ended up paying $3,950 to get the boat back. I didn’t authorize any of the extra charges; however, they all showed up on the blank work order I had signed earlier in the week. Don’t you think that a blank work order is pretty much like handing a blank check over to the service provider?

4. Use your credit card as a buffer for your payments.
Finally, if learning a little bit about car maintenance and service is a little intimidating to you, then take someone along with you to the garage who knows a thing or two about cars and who can sniff out an auto repair scam as it’s being hatched. And use a gas credit card or cash back credit card whenever possible to pay for auto repairs. This ensures that you’ll get your car back, gives you an out (through the chargeback process) in the event that things aren’t on the up and up, and earns you money on purchases that you can use towards pricey auto repairs. All technicians get a bad rap for trying to sell auto parts you don’t need and most consumers complain about their hefty labor time charges. We are still stymied at why this is? Not many occupations offer up this unique experience of always feeling like you’re a crook. People will pay home repair experts if their hot water tank is leaking or their furnace isn’t working, but often, no very often, complain about the amount of their vehicle repairs–even if it’s just required maintenance like a lube-oil-filter or full-service check-up. There are ways to work with your technician to achieve results that make you happy and won’t leave your auto repair guy feeling like a crook. Use these tips everytime you visit your auto repair center whether it’s a franchised dealership, auto repair chain, or just a plain old independent repair facility:

1. Make a list at home before you visit your mechanic and be specific about repairs or checks you want done.

2. When you arrive at your repair center, ask if you can communicate directly with your mechanic. Most service writers should be happy you request this. If they don’t or refuse, find another repair center.

3. Explain exactly what your problem is and try and be specific about what the vehicle is doing or not doing. No mechanic is a crystal ball reader and all vehicles are different so don’t just drop the vehicle off and expect them to figure it all out on their own.

4. Insist and go on a test drive before your technician begins the repair process especially if your vehicle is making a noise you can’t describe or identify. My 80 year old father-in-law bought a new vehicle and took his vehicle to the repair facility a whopping ten times for a sound he heard repeatedly but could not identify. Instead of insisting on a pre-repair test drive, the mechanic tried his best to find the cause of the noise to no avail. Once I suggested a pre-repair test drive, the noise he was hearing was his automatic door locks that were performing as required–locking at the 17 mile-per-hour mark. Not only was my father-in-law’s time wasted, the mechanic’s time was as well and further, the mechanic was most likely not paid for anything other than the first visit and each time he looked at the vehicle, the repair facility where the mechanic worked probably looked at each visit as a “comeback” so he made no money on those repeated visits.

5. Understand how technicians are paid. People complain about the cost of labor. First, all good repair facilities utilize labor time guides that are given to the repair facility by the vehicle manufacturer or from an independent source such as All-Data. For example, if a labor guide says it should take one hour to fix a water pump on a specific vehicle–that is all the mechanic gets paid for. Even if it takes the mechanic two hours to fix the water pump, they only get paid for one hour of work–this is called a flat-rate hour. So, your mechanic and repair facility are not ripping you off, they are going by the guidelines provided to them that is utilized nationwide by all auto repair centers. Don’t be so quick to complain about nationally recognized labor time guides.

6. Most mechanics achieve some sort of ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification in all or specific areas of auto repair. If your auto repair shop has an ASE Master Technician–that means they’ve been through grueling tests–and passed. Tests offered by ASE are not easy, so keep that in mind if your tech is ASE certified.

7. If your auto repair center is a manufacturer franchised facility, say a Ford dealership, when your vehicle is brought to the mechanic with problems and no clear solutions, all franchised dealerships rely on a computer or telephone system that connects them with the manufacturer technicial department. These departments are full of tech experts who work with the technician to fix one of their vehicles. Often, it’s not your mechanic whose running the show, it’s this technical department–so don’t always blame the mechanic.

8. Negotiate – Yes you can ask to speak to the owner of the repair facility if you feel your repairs and the amount you owe are unfair. If you do this, remember to keep calm and discuss what you feel went wrong. Be fair when speaking and ask questions. There’s a good chance the two of you can come to a negotiation that you both feel comfortable with.

9. Keep up regularly scheduled maintenance. You can ask your mechanic or read your owners manual–something most people never do. Your owner’s manual will let you know when it’s time for varied tune ups such as 3,000 mile checks, 30,000 mile checks, and what should be completed at each check.

10. Don’t blame the mechanic if your vehicle fails and you didn’t keep up with any regularly scheduled maintenance items. If you haven’t changed your oil within recommended times and your engine fails, ask yourself who is at fault? It’s not your mechanic so don’t blame them.

The next time you take your vehicle into any auto repair facility, don’t be too quick to judge or think the mechanic is going to “rip you off.” Mechanics get a bad rap and they are truly educated on vehicle repair, especially if they are Master Techs. Treat a mechanic as your would your home repair expert–they are people too and really don’t need the dreaded suspicion each customer comes in with. Keeping an open line of communication and asking questions is your best bet.

Car trouble? Are you sick and tired of the overheating and the non-stop oil leaks? Sometimes there are things that we can’t troubleshoot, and well, what mechanics can do – only they can do. You can’t always figure out the cause of an oil leak just by your own diagnosis. You would definitely need to see a mechanic in an auto repair shop. But, looking for a good auto repair shop can be a difficult and challenging process. How do you know you’re picking the right shop? What are the factors you should consider?

The first thing you should do is that you should drop by the shop to check if they have trained, hardworking mechanics and high end equipment. Of course, there are also other things you need to check out. There is always more than meets the eye. An auto repair shop that looks classy and well maintained doesn’t necessarily mean it can provide you with good customer care, honest work and reasonable prices.

It is best to know something about vehicle repairs so that you are not caught off guard when conversing about the repair. You should also be cautious of the shops that take advantage of an unknowledgeable client. When people sense that you don’t know much about something, they may grab the opportunity to rip you off, or worse, tell you to have something repaired that isn’t really broken.

You should also consider feedback about the shop. Ask around. If you know someone who has any experience with that shop, listen to his or her comments. It always pays to be inquisitive. Do a background check on the auto repair shop. You need to know if the shop’s mechanics are highly trained and competent.

Ask for a written estimate for major repairs. You can compare prices with other auto repair shops by checking them out yourself. You can give other shops a phone call or visit their websites to do the research to save time. You would also want to check into the quality of materials the shop uses for their clients, and the brands of their parts as well.

You would also want to ask for ongoing promotions and offers to save you money. Make sure you find out about their service warranty. Aside from the rates, you also deserve good customer care. Make sure they entertain all your questions and answer you thoroughly.

Knowing all these factors, you can carefully decide which shop to choose. Don’t be in a rush though, and don’t be impulsive. Doing so can save you hundreds of dollars, or cost you a lot. When it comes to the quality of the auto repair information contained in the all data service manuals it really boils down to what was provided to them. The more information that is received from the manufacturer the more repair diagrams and service bulletins will be contained in the online version of the manual.

Tip of the hat to Chevrolet for providing, from what I can see every drop of information that is contained in their professional dealership chevy repair manuals to the all data information service. Wag of the finger to the foreign car companies that do not supply the best information possible.

This boils down to a raging debate about whether or not car manufacturers should be obligated to supply auto repair information to the public and aftermarket repair shops.
Some automakers are pushing for the right not to make this information available to the public.

If you think about it if this information was withheld then only dealerships would have the necessary information to perform all repairs. The do-it-yourself car mechanic as well as your local repair shop would be left out in the cold.

Chevrolet and the other General Motors products as well as most American car manufacturers believe that you have the right to repair your vehicle. This is why the information that all data provides in its online auto repair manual service is directly tied to the amount of information that is supplied from the car-makers.

Long story short when you subscribe to the all data service not all vehicles are created equally. In fact some vehicles have a lack of quality information.

I have found the best ones to be from Chevrolet, Chrysler and Ford. The Japanese vehicles are well represented like Nissan, Toyota and Honda. I think the worst ones are from German automakers ( My opinion ). Also some Korean made vehicles do not supply as much information as you would find in a Chevy repair manual.

Below in the video I do not mention it but the wiring diagram is from the all data online service manual. At the time of this writing their demonstration vehicle is a 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe. This wiring diagram is the same exact one provided in a professional Chevrolet dealership publication.

The first challenge you will face is finding the right diagnostic chart for the vehicle that you’re working on. Once you find the correct procedure or tree chart then you have to read it, analyze it and understand it fully to be successful.

The first step is to sit down and read the diagram until you fully understand how the circuits work. This may take a little while but will pay big dividends during the diagnosis of your specific car problem.

Do not be concerned with how long this first step takes it is not a sign of weakness or lack of intelligence. If you take some time to understand the circuit and the flow of the repair diagram, you will be able to pick out the malfunction, much quicker. Spend some time now and save more time later is how it works out.

Most auto repair manuals are laid out or drawn as a straight line, better known as a ladder repair diagram. Just about every troubleshooting manual uses this standardized approach. This allows you to apply logic and proceed in an organized fashion.

A tip that I have found helpful is to grab a piece of scrap paper and draw the repair diagram by hand. By doing this, it is easier to understand how the circuit operates and flows.

Another advantage of this is that you can make notes on your sketch of the circuit. When you take a pen to paper, it helps your brain rap around the operation of the circuit a lot easier than if you just stare at a picture of the repair diagrams.

Troubleshooting manual rule number two

When you are tracing an electrical circuit using an automotive repair diagram you always want to work from the load back to the battery.

Find the load component first for example light, horn, coil, solenoid or actuator, then find its ground, and then find the battery.

Trying to read a schematic from positive to negative doesn’t work well. Always work from your load back toward the battery. This rule is important because it gives you a correct direction of diagnosis.

When you are studying troubleshooting manuals and repair diagrams, you will note that there is usually only one load component per circuit. This simple fact creates a straightforward diagnosis with better results.

If you are looking at a large repair diagram, and you see more than one load, example starter, light bulb, backup alarm. You will know that each of these items or loads are on separate circuits, and usually run to separate fuses.

In most cases you will find electrical failures isolated to one circuit. If you find yourself jumping around into multiple circuits for diagnosis, it’s time to take a step back and return to rule number one. And go back to study the diagram more thoroughly.

Just like most things in life the more you use a troubleshooting manual, the easier the repair and diagnosis becomes. This is most definitely one case of practice makes perfect.

Studying repair diagrams and learning how to use troubleshooting manuals is an extremely valuable skill. Not just for use in the automotive world, but also construction, equipment repairs, plumbing, and computer system diagnosis all use a standardized ladder repair diagrams.

Fast efficient cars are the wave of the future and the first big wave hit the beach about 2 years ago. We all want and need more miles per gallon, but none of us want to give up performance along the way.

I will be writing a couple of articles about this subject, but I wanted to focus on three General Motors cars in today’s article. You can now find these vehicles used with low miles and reasonable prices.

In my opinion GM is now leading the way on raising average miles per gallon, while at the same time increasing horsepower and performance. Since their relaunch they are a much lighter and efficient company that is better able to respond to consumers desires.

My first example of the fuel efficient work by General Motors is the Pontiac solstice GXP. This is one of those unusual cases where the hotter version of the car is actually more fuel-efficient as well.

The solstice GXP delivers 28 miles to the gallon on the highway and 19 in the city, which gives it an average fuel economy of about 24 miles per gallon for mixed driving situations. Just because Pontiac is no longer in business does not mean you can’t buy this car anymore!

I see these cars along with the sister ship by Saturn on many dealers used car lots. Some people worry about the availability of parts but I do not think this will be an issue since many parts crossover to models still being built by other GM brands.

The Pontiac solstice GXP comes with the 2 Liter turbocharged four-cylinder power plant. The standard solstice is equipped with a 2.4 L engine that is not as fuel-efficient. The performance on the vehicle is an impressive zero to 60 times of 5.5 seconds and a total quarter-mile time of 14.0 seconds.

This is very impressive to me, because the fastest car I owned was a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am with a 6.6 L 403 V-8 engine. My Trans Am received 8 miles to the gallon and turned a best quarter-mile time of 13.75.

The price for the Pontiac solstice GXP is listed at 30,000. With a good trade and some haggling this vehicle could be had for around $25,000. This fast efficient cars one drawback is it is a 2 seater.

The fastest fuel efficient car

The 2008 Chevrolet Corvette Z51 can be purchased used at a fraction of the 2011 model year price. The 08 vette completely blows my mind. The LS3 V-8 power plant produces 430 horsepower.

Yet the vehicle is capable of 26 miles per gallon on the highway Chevrolet has reported that the Corvette with a six speed manual transmission cruising in the overdrive top gear has seen north of 28 miles per gallon during testing. This fast efficient cars fuel economy has not reduced it’s performance from previous years. The zero to 60 times is reported at 4.2 seconds.

The total quarter-mile time has been reported as 12.6 seconds at 115 mph. Of course when you have your foot to the floor to achieve these performance standards you will not be receiving that fantastic fuel mileage.

To compare this to my non fuel efficient present day vehicle I have a 2004 Chevy blazer with a 4.3 later V6. The best fuel economy I have seen in my mix of city and highway driving has been 15 miles to the gallon.

So for the Corvette to achieve its average of 21 miles per gallon is truly amazing to me. The price on the Corvette stood at $56,185 brand-new 0 miles out of the box. Pretty good for what you get from this fast efficient cars overall performance.

Fuel efficient car last but not least

Another top performer for both performance, price and fuel economy is another entry from Chevrolet. Chevrolet’s slogan used to be what is good for America is good for Chevrolet and I am starting to believe this.

The Chevrolet cobalt SS shares the same 2 L turbocharged engine that is in the Pontiac solstice GXP. The engines 260 base horsepower rating is at 26 miles per gallon for average fuel economy.

General Motors has stated that the vehicle is capable of 30 miles per gallon or more on the highway. These numbers are as impressive as this little vehicle’s performance.

The cobalt SS reports a quarter-mile time of 14 seconds flat at 102 mph. Zero to 60 times as reported at around five seconds. The cobalt SS has also been in equipped with a performance suspension that would make any serious driver, very happy.

The best part about the Chevrolet cobalt SS is that the vehicles sticker price comes to 23,490. This is a lot of bang for your car buying dollar.

Fast efficient cars my opinion

It is said that it takes General Motors more than one year to retool a plant and billions of dollars to change the vehicle that plant produces. General Motors has begun this process by retooling plants that build large SUVs to produce small performance oriented vehicles.

The company is betting and actually putting all of its eggs in this fuel-efficient performance oriented car market basket.

GM used to be known as the slow moving giant. It appears that GM is now modeling itself after its most recent successful vehicles as increasing their performance and lowering their overhead.

This is necessary for the company to survive, and I plan to continue to support America’s largest and greatest car manufacturer.

The Consequences Of Neglect

Failing to address the problems in your car early on can result in a lot more of troubles, such as the following:

• More serious damage. Been ignoring the puddle of fluid that you often see under your car recently? That could be oil starting to leak, and ignoring it can lead to total oil loss among the various engine parts. And if you’re unfortunate, that can damage many of the various engine components and you may face a whole lot more of inconvenience. Car problems often start small. When neglected, they grow bigger until they overwhelm you.

• Accidents. If you’ve been hearing your brakes squeal each time you step on the pedal to stop, that’s one sign that the brake pads are already worn-out. If you don’t take action and don’t replace the pads, you may experience a sudden brake failure that may lead to serious road accidents or even death.

• More expenses. Of course, smaller inconveniences turned bigger problems are always proportional to simple expenses turned bigger expenditures. Your car is one thing you shouldn’t skimp on, or you may one day find yourself facing a bigger expense due to neglect.

All these are serious issues you wouldn’t want to deal with throughout your vehicle ownership. Therefore, it’s important that you pay attention to your car and address problems whenever you encounter them.

You can now install your new fuel filter by doing the exact opposite of the removal procedure. Screw the bolts back in, make sure the line is on. And don’t forget to put the fuel pump fuse back in its place lastly. You can now start your engine and feel the new filter work efficiently.
