How To Replace Your Car’s Fuel Filter
Replacing the fuel filter is very easy to do. You don’t have to be a professional mechanic to do it and it takes only a few minutes to do. If you regularly use your car, replacing the fuel filter should be done at least once or twice a year. You need to remember that this should be a part of your car’s regular maintenance schedule and should not be neglected.
The first step in replacing your fuel filter is by relieving the fuel system pressure. This is very important as this is for safety in order to avoid any damage to the engine as well as injury. If you recently used your car, you need to get the engine to completely cool down first. You also need to put on eye protection before you relieve pressure on the fuel system.
If you don’t relieve the pressure, the high pressure release when you unscrew the fuel lines can result in explosion or fire. To relieve the pressure on the fuel system, you need to locate the fuel pump fuse or the relay that operates the fuel pump. Once you’ve located these things, you need to start the car. While the engine is running, pull out the fuse or the relay. You will know if you pulled the right one as the engine will quickly die as pulling the fuse or the relay will leave the fuel line and the fuel filter unpressurized.
The next step is to disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel filter. If your car is one of the later models, then it may have a fuel injection system. You will need two open end wrenches that are the right size for the fuel filter fittings. Remove the fittings.
After this step, you will now be able to remove the old fuel filter. You need to remember that the filter may be held by a clamp. You can usually release the fuel filter from the clamp by using a flat head screwdriver. Lift the old fuel filter out carefully as it may still be full of gas.
The next step is by replacing the fuel filter washers. These washers are specially made to withstand high pressure and are usually made in copper or aluminum. You need to remove the old ones and replace it with new ones that match.
The last step is to place the new fuel filter. Installation of a new fuel filter is easy. It is just opposite the removal process. Once you get the new filter installed, you are now ready to go. Just don’t forget to put the fuel pump fuse or the relay back on before you start the car. With a new fuel filter, you will be able to maintain your car’s engine as well as get better gas mileage.
